Carl Edison Borders, Jr., M.D., 89, of San Francisco, California, died on February 19, 2026.
Carl was born in Lost City, Kentucky on August 17, 1936, to the late Carl E. Borders, Sr. and Elsie D. Borders of Rochester Hills, Michigan.
He graduated from Pontiac High School in 1954, took a year to work, build a sailboat, and earn his tuition. He then went on to the University of Michigan and graduated from its Medical School in 1964.
Upon completing his Internship in San Francisco, he was drafted into the United States Army with the rank of Captain and served a year in Vietnam with a MUST Unit operating in his chosen field of Orthopedics. While he was in Vietnam, his son, Carl E. Borders, III was born.
Upon completion of his military service, he settled in Winston Salem, North Carolina to complete his residency in Orthopedics. During his residency, his other son, Craig P. Borders was born.
Upon completion of his residency, he, his wife, Abby (Chapman), and boys moved to San Francisco where he opened his Orthopedic practice and became a full-time golfing Doctor and member of The Olympic Club where he remained a member until his death. He later became a founding member of The Palms Golf Club in La Quita, California so he could continue his passion in the winter months. He was an avid sailor who built his own sailboat in the winter of 1954-55 at the age of 18 and sailed on Silver and Loon Lakes near Pontiac, Michigan in the summer of 1955. Later, while in Medical School, he sailed a friend’s two mast Trimaran sailboat alone from Bay City to Traverse City thru Lake Huron, the Straits of Mackinaw and Lake Michigan. He raised his sons sailing on the San Francisco Bay and skiing in nearby Lake Tahoe with family and close friends.
He is survived by his sons, Carl E. Borders, III of Redondo Beach, California, and Craig P. Borders of Santa Barbara, California; three grandchildren Arden L Borders of Redondo Beach, Maxine S. Borders and Luke G. Borders of Santa Barbara, California; his siblings, Claudia M. Borders (Nancy) of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Sidney R. Borders (Lynne) of Shelby Township, Michigan, and Dale R. Borders (Janet) of Battle Creek, Michigan; nephews and niece, Matthew Borders, Bryan (Jennifer) Borders, Jeffrey (Chelsie) Borders, and Kate Borders; and his great niece and nephews, Elsie, Odin and Holden.
